Bac Lieu

Bac Lieu Province situated in the Mekong River Delta. It shares its border with Can Tho City and Soc Trang Province to the north, the East Sea to the south, Ca Mau and Kien Giang provinces to the west.

The provincial capital is Bac Lieu City. Other administrative divisions include Hong Dan, Vinh Loi, Gia Rai, Dong Hai, Phuoc Long, Hoa Binh.



Bac Lieu is 280km from Ho Chi Minh City, 67km from Ca Mau, 50km from Soc Trang, and 113km from Can Tho. The National Road N°. 1 crosses the province and links to Soc Trang and Ca Mau provinces.

After April 1975 Bac Lieu and Ca Mau were merged into one new entity called Minh Hai Province. This land was a part of the Khmer Empire which ruled most of Indochina many centuries ago. It is still home to many ethnic Khmer people. In 1996, Minh Hai Province was split into two, with the northeast becoming Bac Lieu Province and the southwest becoming Ca Mau Province.

Bac Lieu has many large rice paddies and fertile land, which make a good condition for fruit tree planting.

The weather is divided into two seasons: rainy and dry seasons. The annual average temperature is 240C.

Bac Lieu used to play importance role in exploitation and developing of French colonialists so that the province has existed several western-style villas and palaces. Coming there, tourists have more knowledge about very rich and popular Bac Lieu Mandarins. And they can visit the Bac Lieu Bird Reserve, unforgettable taste longan gardens, Viet Hung old Tower, Xiem Can Pagoda or discover mangrove cajeput forest.

Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary


Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary is considered as one of the most attractive ecotourism spots in the Mekong River Delta. Thanks to its biological diversity, the sanctuary was recognized as Nature Reserve in 1984.

Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary boasts the natural mangrove forest ecosystem on the area of about 385ha, of which 19ha is primeval forest.

The bird reserve is the home of 46 species of birds, including a large population of white herons. Besides, Bac Lieu Bird Reserve also has many valuable and rare species of birds such as painted stork, darter, etc.

The villa of Bac Lieu mandarin’s son

Bac Lieu mandarin’s son was used to refer sons of rich families in Bac Lieu Province in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Of which, the most famous one is Tran Trinh Huy (1900-1974) and the name “Bac Lieu mandarin’s son” was almost for him only.

Xiem Can Pagoda

Xiem Can pagoda is one of the biggest and most splendid Khmer pagodas in Mekong River Delta.

The pagoda was built in 1887 on an area of about 43ha with many unique architectural works which are typical for Khmer culture. The pagoda’s gate is designed with three towers at the top and statues of multi-headed snakes according to Cambodian Angkor’s architectural style. Highlight of the pagoda is the sanctum built on 1.5m-high foundation.

Quan De Pagoda

Quan De Pagoda is located on the bank of Bac Lieu River in Bac Lieu City, Bac Lieu Province. The architecture of the Quan De Pagoda deeply characterises the Hoa people.

The Hoa people in the area consider the pagoda to be a cultural symbol. Quan De Pagoda was built in 1835 by a Chau Quai salt merchant who encouraged the local people to raise funds for its construction.
